Award-winning Noche Flamenca, recognized as Spain's most successful and authentic touring company, will bring the passion, emotion and mystery of flamenco to the Phillips Center Thursday, November 12.
Formed in 1993 under the direction of Martín Santangelo and his wife (lead dancer), Soledad Barrio, the company has been hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances. Soledad has won awards from over 12 different countries around the globe for her excellence in dance.
Santangelo has successfully brought to their audiences the essence of one of the world's most complex art forms without the use of tricks or gimmicks. All aspects of flamenco - dance, song, and music - are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company - the very heart and soul of flamenco.
The flamenco exists in three forms: el cante (the song), el baile (the dance), and la guitarra (the guitar playing). Gypsies are often credited with the "invention" of flamenco, and it is at least certain that they played an important part in its creation. But the popular songs and dances of Andalusia also had a major influence on early Flamenco.
Of Santangelo's work, flamenco editor of Dance Insider Anna Arias Rubio said, "Santangelo never compromises the integrity of flamenco by pandering to commercialism... The successful sold-out appearances of Noche Flamenca prove that well-presented, unadulterated flamenco can move, inspire, and entertain audiences from all cultures."
It is with purity, integrity and ferocity that Noche Flamenca will take the stage Thursday, November 12, 7:30 p.m. at the Curtis M. Phillips Center.

University of Florida Performing Arts does more than entertain. It breaks down walls. It breaks down the walls between people by increasing cultural awareness through programming that attracts artists and audiences from around the globe. It breaks down the wall between patron and performer with educational programs such as master classes, artist residencies and pre- and post-performance discussions. It breaks down the wall between health and illness with AIM Together, a collaborative program between UFPA and Shands HealthCare that brings world-class performing artists to those who are hospitalized. It breaks down the wall between idea and realization by commissioning and nurturing new work. Art doesn't have walls. But sometimes life does. UFPA breaks down the walls, enriching the lives of the citizens in the Heart of Florida, helping to make Gainesville "the #1 place to live."
