The Waterfront Playhouse will present their popular New Plays In May series on May 19 and 26. This year's series will feature staged readings of three original scripts from Key's playwrights.
"Going Again" by Bob Bowersox and "Fortune Cookie" by Mike Tomes will appear May 19 and "Poof" by Josh Kaplan will appear May 26. Readings start at 8 p.m., with time for audience feedback to playwright, director and cast after each reading.
"Going Again" is a comedic assembly line of Travelers checking in with Facilitators on their way from one life to the next. Questions of life and death are a common theme for Bowersox, a resident of Key West who has written numerous scripts for both stage and screen.
"Fortune Cookie" is a series of funny vignettes centered around these tasty after-dinner treats and the prophetic messages the characters find inside. This is the first play from Tomes, a resident of Big Pine Key whose artistic credits include puppet theater design and performance.
"Poof" is the first full-length play from Josh Kaplan, an attorney who recently came to Key West to exercise and develop his creative talents through writing. Ronan, a gay actor waiting for his big break, makes a deal with the devil to "play it straight" in public in exchange for Hollywood superstar status. Life in the closet quickly suffocates Ronan, who must decide whether or not to go through with the deal.
Admission is free and all are welcome to attend in order to give the playwrights valuable feedback, which will help to take their projects to the next stages of development. The doors open at 7:30.
