New Plays in May to bring local works to stage in two nights of readings
The Waterfront Playhouse presents "New Plays in May," a two-night series featuring staged readings of the works of newly emerging playwrights living in the Florida Keys. The readings are scheduled for 8 p.m. on both May 11 and May 18 and sponsored by the Key West Players at Waterfront Playhouse.
Admission is free and open to the public.
On May 11, readers will present three short plays.
"The Mediator" is a 10-minute comedy that Islamorada playwright Ray Arsenault collaborated on with fellow playwright Thatcher Freund at a recent theater festival. The script explores the "clicks" and "drags" of married life when husband and wife are both addicted to cyberspace.
Key West playwright Rebecca Gleason uses absurdist humor and an element of surprise in "Parents Who Kill Their Children" to poke in the proverbial eye a public glued to the media and its coverage of human tragedy.
"Mary McConaughey Here," a short comedy by Key West playwright Connie Hurst, features a feisty Irish matron with the pluck of Granny from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and the dry wit of Sophia from "The Golden Girls." Joanna, who's certain she knows her mother better than anyone, discovers a different side to Mary in the final moments of the play.
On May 18, readers will present "A Live and Lusty Matter," a full-length drama by Key West playwright Chris Tittel. Based on more than eight years of research, the script profiles the rise and fall of Clara Bow, silent film siren, notorious flapper and Hollywood 's "It Girl."
