Cabaret Unkempt

MIAMI, June 27, 2006 — Miami Performing Arts Center just added 14 dynamic new performances to its inaugural 2006-2007 "MPAC Presents" season, including high-energy acts, fun-filled shows and superb musicians hailing from Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Guinea as well as Miami, New Orleans, Utah and New York.

The global performances going on sale today exclusively to members of the Alliance for MPAC, and to the general public on July 10, include Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil, co-presented with the Rhythm Foundation; the kooky comedy of German theater troupe Familie Flöz; Ba Cissoko, the edgy Guinean quartet that blends electrifying rock riffs with traditional West African music; and Rock en Ñ, an evening of hip Hispanic rock 'n' roll starring Colombia's Aterciopelados and Barcelona's rock-reggae-rap sensation MaCaCo, presented in collaboration with Fundación Autor.

MPAC will also present a wide variety of its best South Florida talent during the inaugural season – from Miami's emerging artists to Latin music's hottest couple. A Chivas Regal presentation, The Living Room series is a group of intimate one-night-only performances in the Studio Theater, introduced by MPAC curator of jazz programs, Fernando Gonzalez. It will make its debut in 2006 with three superb jazz concerts, including performances by two widely known local vocalists – the hugely popular Nicole Henry and Miami native Carmen Lundy – as well as bluesman and master jazz vocalist Andy Bey. On Valentine's Day 2007, married musical couple Willy Chirino and Lissette will perform together for the first time in a one-night-only engagement exclusively at MPAC.

MPAC will host the world premiere of Cabaret Unkempt, jointly commissioned by MPAC and 651 Arts, a satirical comedy written and performed by Miami native Jennylin Duany and the first full work from the Center's MPAC Generation program to premiere on the stage. A commissioning initiative focused on enhancing artistic opportunities for local artists, MPAC Generation helps local artists focus and shape their performing arts pieces by assisting them in securing financing and offering artistic advice in various areas of production.

Youthful classical music quintet The 5 Browns, presented with the generous support of Joyce and M. Anthony Burns; Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, a Chivas Regal Presentation; Broadway songstress Barbara Cook, the zany-yet-educational Newton's Revenge, and comedian Paula Poundstone also join the diverse and rich lineup going on sale.

Members of the Alliance for MPAC* can purchase tickets for these 14 new shows starting today Tuesday, June 27. Sale to the general public begins on Monday, July 10 at 10 a.m. Tickets for every show either presented or produced by MPAC start at $15 and can be purchased online at www.miamipac.org or by calling the Box Office at (305) 949-MPAC (6722).
