In order to reach the largest possible audience, Broadway and Hollywood have tried to sterilize Anne Frank; minimizing her Jewishness and anything even slightly unsavory about her character.
In this new adaptation, Wendy Kesselman uses materials originally censored from Anne's diaries, to give us a fuller portrait of Anne -- Jewishness intact; warts and all. Some have said that this Anne seems "too modern." But they have been weaned on the censored diary and sterilized movie. They only "think" they know Anne Frank.
In fact, Katie Schwartz is, perhaps, the closest thing to the real Anne Frank that you have ever seen. Here is an Anne who is not just loving and wise beyond her years, but also a petulant, smart-ass teenager who is not afraid to mouth-off to her elders when she feels circumstances demand. And, like all adolescents, she is trying to control her burgeoning sexuality. This is more than difficult while hiding from the Nazis in the confines of "The Secret Annex" with her parents, sister, the Van Daans, Dr. Dussel and Peter. . . the boy who is the object of her affection and with whom she shares a special bond. As Europe burned around them, they hid for more than two years!! THIS IS NOT THE ANNE FRANK YOU THINK YOU REMEMBER!!
