Mosaic Theatre Announces Winners in STOP! THE VIOLENCE Video Contest
Mosaic Theatre announced the winner of its Stop! The Violence Video Contest: Alex Novell (Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School) for his video entitled "Stop The Violence." In second place is Kali Rosendo (University School of NSU) for a video entitled "Words Hurt," and the team of Edward Hurowitz, Brandon Bell and Brett Kahn (University School of NSU), with their video entitled "Rebirth," takes the third prize.
Mosaic Theatre received numerous contest entries from area high schools, and finalists were chosen based on votes cast by Facebook friends and by a panel of celebrity judges including: Brett Loewenstern (semifinalist, American Idol Season 10), Emmy Award Winner Louis Aguirre (of WSVN's Deco Drive), and award-winning playwright Joe Calarco. The finalist videos were shown to audiences attending the World Premiere of Calarco's acclaimed play "A Measure of Cruelty" which ran for four weeks at Mosaic Theatre and garnered significant critical praise. During its run, audience members were invited to vote for their favorite student video.
In his video, Alex Novell relates how he was a target of bullying and stresses the importance of having someone there to help. His appeal to viewers to "be there for one another" struck a chord with voters and his video was selected as the grand prize winner. Novell will receive the $500 Stuart & Cecelia Kirsner Scholarship and also an SAT Prep Course by Huntington Learning Center (value $200).
Mosaic Theatre congratulates all the contest entrants on their outstanding submissions. Awards will be presented on opening night of the theatre's next production, Adam Rapp's acclaimed coming-of-age drama
"The Edge of Our Bodies." On Friday, June 8th, contest winners will attend as the theatre's honored guests and will be presented their awards prior to the evening's performance.
The theatre closes its current season with
"The Edge of Our Bodies," which was a major hit at the 2011 Humana Festival. Performances are Thursdays 8pm, Fridays 8 pm, Saturdays 3 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays 2 pm at Mosaic Theatre, located at 12200 West Broward Boulevard in Plantation.
