"Miami Beach - the MUSICAL"!
The history of Miami Beach is a year-long, multi-media project from the Arts at St Johns. It includes a fabulous kick-off party, a collection of dozens of true Miami Beach stories, diverse workshops, an art exhibit, book/play readings, jazz events, AND... a collaboration with composers and songwriters for an all-original, full musical in October 2010.
The KICK-OFF is on Thursday, April 22, 2010, when the PARTY starts at 7 pm at the Miami Design Preservation League's new Art Deco Welcome Center and Ocean Auditorium at 1001 Ocean Drive on South Beach. The premiere of the all-original, "Miami Beach - the MUSICAL" is scheduled on October 1 with additional performances on October 2 and 3 at Arts at St Johns, 4760 Pinetree Drive, Miami Beach, 33140.Miami Beach history is anything but dull!
The concept of a Miami Beach history musical came from two long-time Beach residents: artist Deborah Weed and ASJ's Artistic Director, David Kingery. Carol Hoffman-Guzman, the organization's director, began scouring the area for interesting stories from people who have lived, worked, or played on Miami Beach.
The resulting stories, posted on FaceBook, show the amazing diversity of people who make up Miami Beach, from all ethnicities, backgrounds, and life styles - a colorful undercurrent that belies today's image of a celebrity-encrusted Miami Beach.
The Kick-Off Celebration Party will feature a live preview of the Musical, decadent delights of different decades in both food and drinks, a Miami Beach trivia contest from Miami Beach author Seth Bramson, a celebrity look-alike contest with prizes, and a silent auction of Miami Beach-themed art, services and soon-to-be-named treasures!
The MUSICAL Kick-Off Party (April 22, 8pm) is co-sponsored by Miami Design Preservation League, The Market Company, Sandbar Lounge, AMC Promotions (Prairie Organic Vodka), Cortese Designs, TD Bank, and the cultural affairs departments of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold and they are available online at www.artsatstjohns.com or by calling 305-613-2325.
"Miami Beach - the MUSICAL" is a fun-filled, song and dance performance of many Miami Beach stories. It is rich with juicy details of successes and scandals, of dreams fulfilled and shattered. It will make you laugh, cry and wish you were here then and now. Expect a few surprises - including cameo appearances of local politicians and personalities - or their doppelgänger images. The performances will be held (on October 1, 2 and 3) at the Arts at St. Johns, 4760 Pinetree Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33140.
