Caldwell Theatre Company Presents The Florida Premiere of
MARIE ANTOINETTE: THE COLOR OF FLESH
By Joel Gross
Caldwell Theatre Company presents the Florida Premiere of Joel Gross' seductive and compelling drama, Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh this February 24 – March 30.
Set in France in the years leading up to and during the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh is the story of an imagined love triangle between the 19-year-old Queen (who ages to age 38,) her portrait artist (loosely based on the actual portraitist Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun) and the passionate liberal aristocrat who loved them both.
Featuring Amanda Jones, who created the role of Marie Antoinette for the New York production in April of 2007; Jason Griffith (as Count Alexis de Ligne) from stage, film and television, and Janine Theriault (Founding Member of the Arbat Theatre Company in Montreal) as Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun.
Playwright Joel Gross has published 10 novels, written screenplays (the science fiction thriller "No Escape") and his musical about John Dillinger (written with composer/lyricist Paul Aleman) will be workshopped this spring at The York Theatre Company in New York. His 1992 television movie "Blind Man's Bluff" starred Robert Urich, and "Mortal Armor: The Legend of Galahad" goes into production this spring. His play, The Comfort of Darkness, about Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer who falls in love with one of his patients, makes its Play Reading debut at Caldwell on March 10.
A sensual tale of the Queen, her female portrait artist and the aristocratic, left-leaning French Count who loved them both. The place is Versailles. The time, 1774-1793 when drum rolls beat for the French Revolution and France's Reign of Terror. The characters are Marie Antoinette, her female portraitist, Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun, and Count Alexis de Ligne. This compelling drama traces the beautiful and multi-dimensional Queen from her youthful and heady excesses to her ultimate, vulnerable reality. Look for seductive period costumes by T. Michael Hall and three evocative characters in an 18th century romance. The New York Times said this drama was "a touching story of love," Backstage.com: "Passionate and inspired," and Jill Jichetti of OffOffOnline said of the play: "The social and political are as wickedly intertwined as lovers' limbs."
