Get your feet moving! Build your confidence in front of an audience. It's back-to-school time at The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA).
"This season we have greatly expanded our curriculum to offer families the opportunity to learn and grow in a variety of time slots to suit busy schedules," said Julie Rowe, COPA Director of Education. "We have a wonderful team of teaching artists to provide excellent instruction."
A highlight of the 14-week semester at COPA, which runs Sept. 8-Dec. 18, is the Musical Theatre Wheel, which encompasses drama, dance and voice, and will conclude in a performance onstage Dec. 19. The Wheel is offered Monday afternoons for grades 3-5, Wednesday evenings for grades 6-12, and for home-school students on Friday mornings.
New this year is a program for pre-K children. "Mom's Morning Out" offers classes in yoga and hip hop for mothers, scheduled in tandem with kids' classes. There also will be "Mommy & Me" craft and story hours.
Core classes in musical theater will teach students acting, voice and dance, and how to put them together for a production. Budding actors can explore the craft through theater games, character development, monologues and scene study.
Kids of all ages can hone their dance skills, with classes in tap, ballet, Broadway jazz, hip hop, modern and ballroom dance.
Learn about the style of the Bard in Shakespeare, how to audition in Audition Technique and how to think on your feet in Improv. Students also can write a play in Playwriting Class or explore the art of image in Stage Make-Up Techniques.
Singers can learn how to develop healthy vocal techniques and harmonize in group voice classes. Private lessons with COPA's experienced vocal coaches also are available for singers ages 10 to adult.
Committed performers in middle and high school can audition to be in COPA's touring company, which will take its show on the road, and gain experience and volunteer hours. Touring company auditions will be held again midsemester.
Also new, for seasonal residents, COPA will offer adult classes during weekdays Jan. 4-March 25 in tap and ballroom dance, play readings, Shakespeare, musical theater singing, barbershop music and playwriting, or learn how to write your memoirs in Oral History to the Page.
Registration for classes is now open. Group classes are $15 an hour, with 14 classes per semester. For information, please call (561) 575-2672 (COPA) or visit www.jupitertheatre.org for a complete schedule.
