Maltz Jupiter Theatre Master Classes, Workshops Offer The Chance To Learn From Stage Professionals

Learn from some of the theater world's finest talents this spring as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Conservatory of Performing Arts hosts master classes and workshops.

"These classes and workshops will be valuable to anyone in the theater business, from budding actors to stage veterans," said Julie Rowe, COPA Director of Education.

Master classes offer an opportunity to meet a leading talent agent, and to get inspiration from Tony Award-winning Broadway actors, writers and directors. Workshops offer hands-on training from nationally known local experts in the world of theater, from behind the scenes to stagecraft.

Here are the lineups:

Master Classes
Nancy Carson, Jan. 18, 2010: Carson owns the Carson-Adler Agency, which has represented young talent for 25 years. The artists whose early careers have been guided by her agency include Bethany Joy Galeotti, Leelee Sobieski, Cynthia Nixon, David Krumholtz, Donald Faison, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Lea Michele, Miscia Barton, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Britney Spears. She also is author of the book Raising a Star; students will receive an autographed copy as part of their tuition. Classes are 10-11 a.m. (grades 3-5); 11 a.m.-12 p.m. (parents); 12-1 p.m. (grades 6-12). Cost: $75 for current COPA students; $90 for new students.

John Tartaglia, Feb. 15, 2010: Tartaglia is the Tony-nominated actor and puppeteer of Avenue Q, in which he created and puppeteered the roles of Princeton and Rod. He joined the puppetry team of Sesame Street at the age of 16. He also appeared in the musical Newsical 2006: The Next Edition and starred as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. He recently was seen on Broadway in Shrek The Musical, and starred in the Disney Channel series Johnny and the Sprites. Cost: $75 for current COPA students; $90 for new students.

Duncan Sheik, March 29, 2010: Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik had a hit with Barely Breathing and won two Tony Awards for his show Spring Awakening - for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score. In 2009, he released Whisper House, his first new studio album since 2006. Whisper House, also the title of his latest musical, has its debut in January at The Old Globe Playhouse in San Diego. He appears in concert March 29 at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Class is 5-6 p.m. Cost: $50 for current COPA students; $65 for new students.

B.T. McNicholl, April 12, 2010: B.T. McNicholl was the resident director of Billy Elliot, bookwriter/co-lyricist of 101 Dalmatians (bookwriter, co-lyricist) and associate director of Spamalot. He also staged the European premiere of The Producers for Mel Brooks, and is the author of The It Girl. He directed the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's production of A Christmas Story. Class is 1-2 p.m. Cost: $50 for current COPA students; $65 for new students.

2009/2010 Workshop Series

Learn from Florida's best theatre professionals by interacting and participating in all facets of theatre.

Beverly Blanchette, Jan. 3, 2010: Learn to choose the monologue that best showcases individual talents, and how to audition for performing arts schools. Class is 1-5 p.m. Cost: $95 for current COPA students; $110 for new students.

Nicolas Santana, Feb. 26, 2010: As a certified stage combat instructor, Santana will help students learn the proper combat skills for stage, such as hand-to-hand combat, proper falling and fencing. Class is 12-2:30 p.m. Cost: $95 for current COPA students; $110 for new students.
