The Maltz Jupiter Theatre announces it has received the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund granted by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. This prestigious grant was awarded to the Theatre for the development of four new musicals as part of the new Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting.
Four new unpublished works, selected from a nationwide submission request, will receive a staged reading during the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's 2008/2009 season. Additionally, the Theatre will also host a one week writer's workshop for one creative team chosen from among the year's readings. We are truly honored to have received the financial support from the Community Foundation to contribute to the creation of new work in Palm Beach County, said Tricia Trimble, Managing Director, who proposed the grant last year. I wanted to find funding for a new project that our Artistic Director was passionate about.
The timing on this grant could not be more perfect, said
Andrew Kato, Artistic Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. This year will celebrate the complex process of putting a production together through our 'We Create Art' campaign. The Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting will allow our audiences to witness several musicals as they go through their development stages.
As a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), the Maltz Jupiter Theatre will reach out to the national theatrical community with the hopes of contributing to the art form. New writers often begin their careers through similar reading series that are presented across the country such as the O'Neill National Playwrights Conference in Connecticut and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre.
Kato says, It is important that we create new work in musical theater that reflects the world we live in. More and more theatrical producers are looking to regional theatres to develop productions that are contemporary and relevant.
In just a half-century, a nationwide movement of not-for-profit resident theatres has transformed the cultural landscape, replacing Broadway as the originator of new American works. While the need for a venue for emerging theatrical artists to hone their work is continual, the cost for producing new works on Broadway has become prohibitive, and regional theatres have taken on a recognized role in developing new theatrical works as well as engaging and educating the public in the process.
The writing finalists will be announced at the beginning of October. Limited seating to the reading series will be made available to the public. More information and submission guidelines are available at www.jupitertheatre.org.
