Lynn University's Conservatory of Music Hosts 19 Musical Events in January and February  ImageJon Robertson, dean of Lynn University Conservatory of Music and Philharmonia Guest Conductor, today invited the public to attend 19 musical performances during January and February 2018.

Lynn Conservatory of Music concerts run through next May in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center, the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall or the Snyder Sanctuary, all located on Lynn's Boca Raton campus. The Gingerbread Holiday Concert will be held at Boca Raton Resort and Club.

January

Jan. 11

Roberta Rust in Recital

Lynn piano professor and piano department head Roberta Rust performs a solo piano recital.

  • Thursday: 7:30 p.m.

Jan. 13

The Roger Voisin Memorial Trumpet Competition

Opening Ceremony & Competition Semifinal Round

After a brief welcome and introduction of our semifinalists, they will compete for a chance to advance to the final round by performing mini trumpet and piano recitals for our judges. This round will open to the public.

The Roger Voisin Memorial Trumpet Competition

Judges Recital

Lynn's world-renowned judges present a program of works for trumpet and piano, including the 2018 Commissioned work by James Stephenson III. Competition finalists will be announced.

Trumpet Master Class with Marc Reese

This master class includes special guest appearances by members of the competition jury.

Jan. 14

The Roger Voisin Memorial Trumpet Competition

Competition Final Round & Closing Ceremony

Competitors face off in their final attempt to sway the judges in their favor. This round will be open to the public and feature the finalists as soloists with Lynn's critically acclaimed Philharmonia. An Awards Ceremony and reception will be held immediately following the final performance. Prizes: 1st prize is $5,000, 2nd prize is $2,500, and 3rd prize is $1,500.

Spotlight No. 1: Young Composers

A platform for world premieres! Witness the birth of music as it is first performed. This will be Lynn's 100th world premiere, featuring the works of our composition majors, with the music performed by the composers and their peers.

12th Annual New Music Festival

Spotlight No. 2: Music of Scott Wheeler

The New York Times says Scott Wheeler's work "...shines with craftsmanship. How else could this music bear so much information with such high energy and still give an air of delicacy and transparency?" The American Record Guild states, "Lovers of down-to-earth, intelligent American piano writing should check out this release." Wheeler has received awards and commissions from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Koussevitsky Foundation, the Fromm Foundation, as well as the Stoeger Prize for excellence in chamber music from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He serves as Distinguished Artist in Residence at Emerson College and has been commissioned by the major opera houses and orchestras of the world, including The Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, Boston Lyric opera and the orchestras of Minneapolis, Houston, Toledo and Indianapolis.

Piano Master Class with Leon Fleisher

As a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007, pianist Leon Fleisher was recognized as a "consummate musician whose career is a testament to the life-affirming power of art." In 2018, he will be celebrating 90 years and continues his teaching at the Peabody Conservatory with an international schedule of master classes, performances and orchestral guest conducting. Select Lynn Conservatory students will perform for Fleisher's master class.

Mostly Music Series: Beethoven

Beethoven was born just 14 years after Mozart's birth, but a dramatic historical change was underway-the gradual decay of European aristocracy. Beginning with Beethoven, the composer was transformed into a romantic hero and was to blaze a new path on a musical journey.

Violin Master Class with Elmar Oliveira

Internationally renowned performer Elmar Oliveira, Lynn's Distinguished Artist in Residence, is a devoted teacher and promoter of young violinists. He was the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition.

Feb. 15

Marc Vallon Bassoon Recital

A native of Paris, Vallon holds degrees in bassoon and chamber music from the Paris Conservatoire, as well as a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne. For twenty years, he performed with the Baroque Orchestra of Amsterdam, and is considered one of the world's foremost experts on Baroque bassoon. Vallon will give a master class on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

Marc Vallon is currently the professor of bassoon at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
