The Fantasticks

September 5 – 15, 2007

Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones; Music by Harvey Schmidt

"Try to remember, and if you remember, then follow..."

Holding the world record for the longest running musical after its marathon run at Greenwich Village 's Sullivan Street Playhouse, The Fantasticks has been beloved by audiences for nearly half a century. Already seen in over 12,000 productions worldwide, it's a classic coming-of-age story and a timeless celebration of love—first love, lost love, and, ultimately, true love. At the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. With such treasured songs as "Try to Remember" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain," The Fantasticks promises to steal your heart and kick off our season with unbridled joy. "The perfect musical….It's a gem." — The Wall Street Journal

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
October 10 – 20, 2007
By Tennessee Williams

Hypocrisy, greed and secret passions threaten to tear apart a wealthy but dysfunctional Mississippi family in Tennessee Williams' stunning American masterpiece. Winner of the 1955 Pulitzer Prize, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof searingly portrays the larger-than-life characters of Maggie "the Cat," her alcoholic husband, Brick, and the dominating family patriarch, Big Daddy. Fueled by wicked humor and sexual tension, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is an unforgettable night of theatre. "A play of tremendous dramatic impact…enormous theatrical power." — N. Y. Post

Sunday in the Park with George: In Concert

November 7 – 17, 2007

Book by James Lapine; Lyrics and Music by Stephen Sondheim

One of the musical theatre's most pleasant surprises has been the New York City Center 's Encores! Series of Broadway musicals in concert. Started in 1994 these concerts — with their emphasis on the music and lyrics of Broadway shows, and with no scenery and minimal staging — have grown to become one of the most in-demand musical theatre attractions in New York City . The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre will present its own concert version of the Stephen Sondheim groundbreaking musical Sunday in the Park with George, one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time.  This moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist.

The America Play

February 21 – March 1, 2008

By Suzan-Lori Parks

Pulitzer Prize winner, Suzan-Lori Parks' The America Play is a powerful and provocative theatre piece that echoes the works of Samuel Beckett while focusing on race, history, aspiration and their role in shaping the contemporary American identity. "Is there a more generous, compelling talent on either side of the Atlantic than Suzan-Lori Parks?....Within the dramatist's playfulness…is an entire tragic universe. She has written the most staggering American play imaginable." — N.Y. Observer

Mad Forest

February 20 – March 2, 2008

By Caryl Churchill

Following a trip to Romania , British playwright Caryl Churchill wrote this crazy-quilt drama focusing on two families — one upper class, the other lower — dealing with the social cataclysm brought about by the collapse of their totalitarian government. In Churchill's distinctive theatrical style (she also wrote Top Girls and Cloud 9), the drama tells a story about ordinary people coping with extraordinary crisis. "Bristles with the intelligence and insight of a major writer." — London Financial Times

Both The America Play and Mad Forest will play an alternating schedule over two weeks.

Guys and Dolls

April 16 – 26, 2008

Book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling

Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser

"Call it sad, call it funny.
But it's better than even money
That the guy's only doing it for some doll!"

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical version of New York City , this screwball romantic comedy — considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy — soars with the spirit of Broadway. Featuring a hilarious, fast-paced book and a brash, bright, and brassy score, Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana and even into the sewers of New York City . Funny and romantic, full of crooks, do-gooders and dames, Guys and Dolls is American musical theatre at its very best. "It's the perfect musical comedy." — N. Y. Daily News.
