Touring the United States for the first time in 25 years, the Israel Ballet makes a stop at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 8 p.m. The company will perform choreographer Marius Petipa's Don Quixote.
Tickets are $30-$60 (with a limited number of "smart seats" priced at $30).
The story of the knight-errant who fought windmills during his quest to find the lady of his dreams, Don Quixote features invigorating classical dance, accompanied by rousing music and colorful costumes set against a video-enhanced backdrop.
Since its establishment in 1967, the Israel Ballet has performed at prominent festivals all over the world. It is the only company in Israel performing the great classical and neo-classical ballets of the international repertoire. The company is comprised of dancers from all over the world, among them native Israelis, new immigrants from the former Soviet Union and guests who have been selected by audition. Critics have hailed the Israel Ballet as "wonderfully satisfying," "spectacular" and "first-rate."
Petipa, one of the most influential choreographers of classical ballet (George Balanchine, for one, cited Petipa as his primary influence), premiered Don Quixote in 1869.
This performance by the Israel Ballet is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Manatee-Sarasota. The Dance Series at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall continues with the Joffrey Ballet on Mar. 8.
