This summer, learn about self-confidence and embracing differences while performing in the fun-filled musical Honk, Jr. at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's Conservatory of Performing Arts' Junior Conservatory camp.

Fresh from a Senior Conservatory vacation camp (grades 6-12) that concluded with performances of Footloose, the Conservatory will kick off its annual Junior Conservatory summer camp (grades 3-5) on July 12, in which students learn all aspects of stage production. The three-week camp will culminate in full performances of the musical Honk Jr. on the Theatre's main stage, complete with professional set, costumes, and live musicians.

Other camp options for grades K-5 include separate one-week magic, outer space and fairy tale-themed camps, as well as a two-week dance intensive camp for grades 6-12.

Honk Jr., a contemporary, comic stage adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling, offers a message of tolerance and acceptance. Aimed primarily at children and their parents, the musical is set in the countryside and features a cast of colorful characters that are all barnyard animals.

"It's really an anti-bullying story about how being different is good, and accepting others through the story of The Ugly Duckling," said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Conservatory. "The show gives children the opportunity to explore characters in a fun and exciting way, and also provides a fantastic outlet for imagination and creativity."

Rowe will direct the show, with choreography by Brian Andrews, a Conservatory instructor and veteran performer performed in two of Broadway's longest running shows: Cats and A Chorus Line.

During camp, Rowe will guide students to experience the process of auditioning for a show, a fast-paced rehearsal schedule and the opportunity to showcase all that they've learned onstage.

"The Junior Conservatory is a wonderful chance for young ones in the community to experience the thrill of putting together a show and performing it onstage with costumes, lighting, a professional set and more," Rowe said.

Honk Jr. performances will take place July 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m., with camp scheduled for Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 12 - 30. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.
