GHOST LIGHT SERIES

PRESENTS  "A TASTE OF HONEY"

The Ghost Light Series, an independent theatre project now in its third year, continues showcasing resident talent in small-scale presentations of established works by seasoned playwrights.

Their next session is a play reading of Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey.

Set in England, A Taste of Honey tells the story of Jo, a seventeen-year-old working class girl whose mother, Helen, is a crude, sexually indiscriminate 'slapper.' Jo's mother abandons her after finding Peter, a rich and much younger lover.

At the same time, Jo begins a romantic relationship with a black sailor she meets in school. Their budding love becomes a marriage proposal, which Helen strongly denounces, by ridiculing the idea of Jo marrying. He goes to sea, leaving Jo alone to find lodging with Geoffrey, her gay acquaintance. Geoffrey assumes the role of father until Helen's return, when the future of Jo's new family is put into question.

Delaney creates this world that surrounds us with quirky characters that are relatable, besides tackling social issues like abandonment, interracial relationships, and pre-marital sex. This was in the vein of kitchen-sink plays that helped revolutionize British theatre.

Shelagh Delaney was born on November 25, 1939 in Lancashire. Her first work, A Taste of Honey started off as a novel, then evolved into a play. After the success of the piece, Honey was adapted for film, in which Delaney co-penned the screenplay. She went on write several other works for film and television, but was unable to match the success of her first play.

A success in London, Honey was written when Delaney was 18. In 1960, its American premiere featured Joan Plowright, Angela Lansbury and Billy Dee Williams. It earned the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1961 and a movie based on the play, premiered the same year.
