CONTEMPORARY DANCE meets ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM

The beating of wings. Trees swaying in the breeze. A dancer's arms
akimbo. Award-winning New York-based choreographer Jennifer Monson
returns to Miami with her newest meditation on birds, migration,
navigation and the natural and the built environments. Flight of
Mind builds its own ecosystem with energetic dance states, hundreds
of live plants and sound generated from the building itself. Her
four-person troupe begins the evening with an environmental walk
down Lincoln Road. The dancers then lead the audience into a plant-
strewn and transformed Colony Theater. Prior to the performance a
printed guide directs the audience through multiple levels of the
building on a journey guided by individual sensorial experience.
Here in Florida, where the conflict between landscape as paradise
and unbridled urban sprawl plays out in the daily headlines,
Monson's insistence that our own human bodies and daily lives are
intimately connected to the animals and plants around us could not
be more relevant. Her projects have been awarded grants from the
National Dance Project, Creative Capital, Rockefeller Foundation
MAP, New York Foundation on the Arts, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation,
Altria Inc., among others. Monson received a Guggenheim grant in
2004.
