Curtain Call Productions will kick off its new studio series with the regional premiere of Jonathon Larson's Tick, Tick... Boom! at the new A.C.T. Studio Theatre with a run from July 17th- 27th. Curtain Call, which helms its main series shows out of Flagler Place in Downtown Stuart, will begin offering smaller, more intimate shows as a part of its Studio Series at the A.C.T. Studio Theatre on Ocean Boulevard.
"When I first saw the A.C.T. Studio Theatre, I fell in love with it," says Artistic Director Jake Sanders. "I really walked through the space and just racked my head about what we could do here. There are so many shows we have to pass on for the main series that are just too intimate, but amazing pieces of theatre. Thankfully with A.C.T. we get the chance to bring these gems to fruition for a devoted audience." Tick, Tick.. Boom! is proving to the perfect show to program the space, with the cast of 3 and piano filling up the off-Broadway style space with the Rent composer's autobiographical piece.
Tick, Tick... Boom! began as a musical monologue in the 1990, just before Rent, chronicling his struggles as an artist on the brink of success and failure. But following Larson's death from a rare heart issue on the day of the first performance of his Broadway hit Rent, a close friend and producer decided to reexamine the work and stage it as a 3-person musical. "What's really interesting about the show is just how much life is in it", continues Sanders. "It's not a show about his death- but it's a show that highlights his choice to remain an artist and believe in himself and see things through. A struggle that we can all related to here in the artistic community."
Tick, Tick... Boom! stars an ensemble cast led by veteran actor Bryan Matthew as Jon, Kristi Rose Mills as his girlfriend Susan, and Mariano Garcia IV as Jon's best friend Michael. "There's a lot going on in this show," Says Mariano Garcia IV, who plays Michael. "My character has just given up acting to take a job at a marketing research firm- and while its financially rewarding, its not fulfilling to him. Jon is going through the same struggle of turning 30 and wondering if it is time to throw in the towel."
Audiences will feel uplifted knowing Larson's full story behind Rent and his life. "It's really a message of not giving up, not settling for good enough," says director
Clayton Phillips, who brings years of Broadway experience to the show. "If you like Rent, you really have to see Tick, Tick... Boom! to get the whole story."
Tick, Tick... Boom will play the A.C.T.
