City Theatre is expanding its successful summer season CityWrights program by welcoming award-winning playwright Leslie Ayvazian to Miami to lead one of her popular playwriting workshops on Sunday, February 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Books + Books + Bikes + Lebo, 2602 NW Fifth Ave., Miami.
Ayvazian, who teaches playwriting at Columbia University, has taught her popular workshops at several of City Theatre's CityWrights Weekends during the Summer Shorts Festival. Her workshops focus on prompts and exercises for writers to explore the art and craft of writing and playwriting. City Theatre is partnering with Books & Books to bring the workshop to Books + Books + Bikes + Lebo, an inspiring setting in the heart of Wynwood. The cost of the workshop is $65 per person, discounted to $55 for writers who have attended previous CityWrights Weekends. This workshop is limited to 15 guests. To register, call (305) 755-9401 or email amy@citytheatre.com.
In addition to the workshop, City Theatre and GableStage are co-presenting a one night only performance of Mention My Beauty, Ayvazian's new one-woman show, on Monday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. Ayvazian, whose plays are often produced at City Theatre's Summer Shorts Festival, first performed a preview of the piece at CityWrights 2015. Since then, she has developed and performed Mention My Beauty at New York's Ensemble Studio Theatre and Cherry Lane Theatre, creating a show based on her own provocative, touching and hilarious coming of age during the 60's and 70's. Engaging, irreverent and timely, Mention My Beauty is also a revealing showcase for an extraordinary performer who has been seen on Broadway, off-Broadway, television and regional stages. City Theatre, which is committed to new work and its extended family of playwrights locally and nationwide, is very pleased to bring Ayvazian back to Miami for audiences to enjoy the play and performance that developed from those first pages.
City Theatre is happy to be partnering with GableStage for this event. Joe Adler, Producing Artistic Director of the company, has once again generously offered his theatre to audiences who appreciate an evening of new work in its intimate space. The performance is free, but seating is limited. Following the performance there will be a talkback discussion. GableStage is located at 1200 Anastasia Ave, Coral Gables.
