Caldwell Theatre Company Presents The Whipping Man

The Caldwell Theatre Company will unleash Matthew Lopez's powerful drama, The Whipping Man beginning August 12.

Set against the backdrop of the last day of the Civil War, a badly wounded Jewish confederate soldier returns to his Richmond estate and begs his now freed slaves to nurse him.  In keeping with traditions of that time, the slaves are also Jewish, bringing into question conflicts of societal and religious acceptance.  During the course of the play, secrets are revealed which will irrevocably alter all their lives.  The final scene, set to the backdrop of the Passover Seder, will likely resonate with audiences long after the final bow.

"I wanted to challenge the tradition of producing lighter fare during the summer season", said Clive Cholerton, director of The Whipping Man and Artistic Director of the Caldwell Theatre Company.  "The themes of The Whipping Man, which include personal choice, personal responsibility, and the essence of faith, are so universal, that I knew audiences would be drawn to it.  To not produce the play would have seemed negligent on my part."

The cast of The Whipping Man includes South Florida's premiere character actor and multiple Carbonell nominee, John Archie.  Joining Mr. Archie is Brandon Morris, whom the Caldwell was fortunate to lure back to South Florida from his new home of New York City.  Rounding out the cast is recent New World Theatre School Graduate, Nick Duckhart.

In addition to Mr. Cholerton, the creative team for The Whipping Man includes Tim Bennett-sets, Alberto Arroyo-costumes, Chris Hill-lighting and Sean Lawson-sound.
