Broward County Hosts Award-Winning
County Cultural Forum
The forum will take place in conjunction with the third lecture for
Public Art and Design's 30th Anniversary Speakers Forum Series on May 18, 2006
BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Commission's Cultural Division invites city mayors, managers, parks & recreation directors, city facility managers, and civic and community organization leaders to participate in a County Cultural Forum.
This forum will be of particular interest, as it will be held in conjunction with Broward County's Public Art and Design Program 30th anniversary celebration's lecture program: Sustainable Urban Design, Definitions and Delivery , featuring Dr. Matthew Carmona, Head of the Bartlett School of Planning, University College, London. The May 18th lecture will convene in conjunction with Broward County's County Cultural Forum in the Sunrise Civic Center Theater, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd, at 9:00 am.
Broward Cultural Division's County Cultural Forum program is the recipient of a National Association of Counties Achievement Award in recognition of the work to promote responsible, responsive and effective county government. "We hope city and civic leaders will take advantage of this opportunity to learn about design policy and its impact on sustainable development," says Division Director Mary A. Becht. "This is a chance for municipalities to share regional cultural services and learn about the competitive advantages of other creative cities."
Dr. Matthew Carmona, professor of Planning and Urban Design, and widely published architect and planner, will discuss how the delivery of sustainable development can be joined with quality through thoughtful design policy, and provide frameworks for action plans that can improve the built and natural environments.
With the issues surrounding the future of housing, redevelopment and growth, Dr. Carmona's talk will be valuable for Broward County's civic and business leaders, citizens, and students. Urban Design is now widely recognized, and encompasses the disciplines of urban geography, sociology, public administration, cultural studies, environmental management, conservation and urban regeneration.
