The University of Miami's Department of Theater Arts presents two irresistibly diverse shows this fall: William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and William Finn's A New Brain (one of this author's very favorite musicals.) And, when you purchase tickets to either one of these upcoming shows, you can also buy tickets to the other for half price – it's a no-brainer.
November 8 – 12, 2006 : There is much mischief to be had in Shakespeare's most popular comedy when lovers defy authority and flee the court, only to find themselves caught in a zany web of illusion, romance, and magic in the Athenian woods. Featuring fairies, love potions, mixed-up lovers, magic spells, and a pompous rustic sporting a donkey's head, A Midsummer Night's Dream promises to bring laughter and a healthy dose of enchantment to South Florida this autumn.
November 29 – December 3, 2006 : It was only three days after winning the Tony Award for his Broadway musical Falsettos that composer William Finn was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Faced with this terminal diagnosis, Finn teamed up with playwright James Lapine to create A New Brain, an autobiographical musical about a composer who worries that he'll die without leaving anything of value behind. The result is a lovely comedy that manages to be one of the most life-affirming, heartfelt musicals written in decades. (For mature audiences) Mr. Finn is currently represented on Broadway by his smash musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
