No feathers, no beaks, but plenty of singing, dancing and laughter highlight the upcoming production of Honk!, the hilarious musical based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling.
The British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe has turned the inspirational fairy tale into a surprisingly sophisticated comedy with a truly exhilarating score to delight theater-goers of all ages. Although based on a story for young people, like Disney films, the show works on two levels. Humor is at the core of this show and what flies over the heads of children in the audience will come home to roost with adults and savvy young people. The musical snatched Britain's prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Musical out from under The Lion King and Mama Mia! in 2000.
It's a simple tale, familiar to most and resonant to all - the ugly duckling, rejected for being different from the rest of the brood, learns the pain of prejudice and the power of individuality. In this tale of diversity, Ugly finds himself defended only by his Mother. However, the conniving Cat, determined to make Ugly his most bountiful meal ever, soon separates mother and son, and the show unfolds as a portrait of familial devotion as the two venture near and far to reunite.
This particular production features a cast of talented theatre students who are about to graduate from the Bak Middle School of the Arts, a public Magnet school in West Palm Beach.
