Auditions for Delray Beach's New Theater Academy

Calling all aspiring young actors, actresses, singers and dancers! Don't miss your chance to audition for The Academy at News-Journal Center, a new cooperative program sponsored by Seaside Music Theater and Volusia County Schools.

Volusia County public school students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and who will be juniors or seniors in the 2006-2007 school year are eligible to audition. This professional and comprehensive course is for serious theater students interested in training with theater professionals. Participants earn class credits and develop acting, singing and dancing skills. Class size is limited to 30. 

Participating students are responsible for providing their own transportation to all rehearsals and performances.

Classes for Act I, the first portion of the two-part curriculum, are on Mondays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., starting August 14, 2006, through February 12, 2007, at the News-Journal Center, 221 N. Beach St.

Act II begins February 26, and students attend regular rehearsals. The rehearsals segue into three musical performances on stage at the News-Journal Center on March 30, 31 and April 1, 2007.

Auditions take place at the News-Journal Center on Thursday, May 11 at    6:30 p.m., or Friday, May 12 at 4:30 p.m., or Saturday, May 13 at 9 a.m.

Those planning to audition will need:

  • One musical theater song, memorized with either sheet music in the correct key or a karaoke CD with NO vocals. A piano accompanist is provided.
  • A one-minute monologue, memorized. A comedic piece is preferred.
  • A resume with a list of experience and instruction.
  • A current photograph
  • Proper dance attire, including jazz or character and tap shoes, if you have them. A dance combination will be taught.
  • A contract signed by both the student and parent(s). The contract can be downloaded at www.seasidemusictheater.org.
