The Key West Players, Inc. will be holding auditions at the Waterfront Playhouse for their upcoming productions of THE BEST MAN, written by Gore Vidal and directed by Danny Weathers on Thursday, October 18 between 5:30 and 8:00 pm. There will also be auditions for TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE, written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom, and directed by Carole MacCartee on Friday, October 19 between 5:30 and 8:00 pm.
Auditions will be at the Waterfront Playhouse, located on Mallory Square. The respective production dates are: The Best Man (Dec. 19 to Jan. 12) and Tuesdays With Morrie ( Jan. 23 to Feb. 9).
The Best Man is Gore Vidal's satire on the backstabbing world of political nominations. The play is as fresh today as it was when it premiered in 1960. The plot revolves around 2 men who are vying for the presidential nomination of an unnamed political party. They each have explosive dirt on the other and are threatening to go public with the information and gain the nomination. Suspenseful and witty, the dialogue sparks with verbal fireworks. A critically acclaimed revival appeared on Broadway in 2000, starring Spalding Gray, Chris Noth, Charles Durning, Michael Learned, Christine Ebersole and Elizabeth Ashley. The New Yorker raved "The Best Man is a sophisticated, elegant and damnably entertaining play."
15 roles are available for this large scale production, including 5 small roles that include reporters/delegates. The age range for the actors are early 20s to late 60s. The play will be set in 1960.
Tuesdays With Morrie is the stage version of Mitch Albom's phenomenal best-selling book of the same name. On The New York Times' bestseller list for over seven years, the play captures the touching and witty views of the world according to Morrie Schwartz. The story is about how Mitch reconnected with his college mentor after a 15 year separation. Every Tuesday they explore the lessons of life together and what should and should not matter in gaining a fulfilling life. Told in a highly theatrical manner of lighting, music and language, the play has been a popular choice for regional theatres. The New York Daily News called it "a touching, life-affirming, deeply emotional drama with a generous dose of humor."
Ms. MacCartee will be looking for 2 experienced actors: Mitch is a sports journalist in his late 30's. As the narrator of the story, he needs excellent verbal dexterity. Piano-playing ability is a plus. Morrie is an octogenarian who learns he has Lou Gehrig's Disease, which progresses throughout the play. However, he is a life-force, full of mischief, resourcefulness, wisdom and kindness. He loves to dance.
