Asolo Repertory Theatre Kicks Off 2012 Rep Season

With a Tony Award® winner, three reimagined classics, a screwball comedy and a beautiful retelling of a coming-of-age story that features blazing new compositions, Asolo Rep will take you to Cuba, Poland and beyond all while seating in the comfort of the Mertz Theatre with this season's repertory lineup.

"We are about to launch our most exciting rep season yet with the celebratory American play about the beginning of show business as we understand it in America, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, followed by one of the hottest Tony Award® winning plays of the last few seasons, GOD OF CARNAGE. Also, with this brand new interpretation of a relatively unknown classic in YENTL with new music by Jill Sobule, it promises to be one of the most exciting things we do in this season," said Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards.

The repertory season begins on January 6, 2012 with the opening of Broadway legends Kaufman and Hart's ONCE IN A LIFETIME, which follows three down-and-out vaudeville performers that abandon their struggling act in New York to make it big under the bright lights of Hollywood. Immediately following is Yasmina Reza's Tony Award® winning Broadway sensation, GOD OF CARNAGE, opening January 13, 2012.  After their young sons get into a playground fight, two sets of parents meet to discuss the problem over appetizers. Director Greg Leaming's 90-minute thrill ride will thrust you into the most perilous terrain on earth: parenthood. Opening January 20, 2012 is director Gordon Greenberg's fresh interpretation of YENTL with compositions by singer-songwriter Jill Sobule. Greenberg's adaption is raw and innovative, and will leave audiences wanting more.

Opening March 9 is Noël Coward's FALLEN ANGELS directed by Peter Amster. A comedy about desperate housewives, this is Noël Coward at his best- sharp, witty and utterly sophisticated. Julia and Jane are the - best of friends. Both are married to loving (if slightly dull) husbands, both are approaching middle age with a little regret and both have a secret past – they both have had an affair with a dashing Frenchman named Maurice. Now, Maurice is back in town, and the two embark on an evening of lusty anticipation and hilarious inebriation as they await his arrival. Finishing up the repertory season is Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards' new adaptation of HAMLET, PRINCE OF CUBA. With a Spanish translation by Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz, this production will revolutionize the relationship between Shakespeare and his audiences. Theatregoers will be the first to see a distinctly Cuban Hamlet, which reveals new perspectives on the classic work, while staying true to Shakespeare's original
