The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Mad Cat Theatre Company join forces for the first time to present BROADSWORD, the raucous and rollicking play that combines myth, magic, and heavy metal on stage April 29 - May 9, 2010 at the Carnival Studio Theater in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Tickets are $35, and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at (305) 949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org

Nominated for five Carbonell Awards (South Florida's version of the Tony Awards), the workshop production of BROADSWORD opened in Miami in 2009, and since then has rocketed onto the national scene, including a staged reading at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and a workshop production at the esteemed Juilliard School in New York City.

Written by award-winning local playwright Marco Ramirez, directed by acclaimed writer/director/actor Paul Tei, and featuring a cast of all local actors, BROADSWORD will now have its premiere as a fully staged finished production at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

"BROADSWORD is a tremendous showcase of our local South Florida talent and the ideal production with which to launch the Center's co-presenting partnership with the critically acclaimed Mad Cat Theatre Company," said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. "The writer, director, and cast represent some of Miami's best and brightest theatrical innovators. We are proud to support this production and continue to serve as a home for the development of local talent and risk-taking theater."

BROADSWORD tells the story of a heavy metal band from New Jersey that had risen to local fame, but ultimately disbanded.  Sixteen years later, they learn that their lead guitarist has gone missing and reunite to face a deep, dark mystery which takes them on the musical challenge of their lives. Full of humor, mystery, myth, and music-making, BROADSWORD puts the guys from New Jersey through hell, all while taking the band and the audience on an adventure like no other.

BROADSWORD writer Marco Ramirez is a Miami native and studied at New York University's Dramatic Writing Program and Juilliard's competitive playwriting program.  His work has been produced at The Kennedy Center, City Theatre, Mad Cat Theatre, The Naked Stage, The Yellow Tree, The Juilliard School, and Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival of New American Plays where he has twice received the Heideman Award. Ramirez has been honored with The Bryan Prize for Drama from The Fellowship of Southern Writers, the Le Comte Du Nouy prize from Lincoln Center, and been nominated for the prestigious Helen Hayes Award.  He is currently a staff writer for FX TV's hit show, Sons of Anarchy.

An acclaimed director, actor, and writer, Paul Tei recently appeared on TV in CSI: Miami, and plays Nicky in this production of BROADSWORD.  Tei can currently be seen on the USA original show, Burn Notice, as Barry.  He is the founder and Artistic Director of Mad Cat Theatre Company, established in 2000, with the mission to create a vibrant new theater ensemble composed of all Miami artists.  His extensive list of awards include the Miami New Times Best Comedy Award (Here In My Car); Best New Work and Best Director Curtain Up Awards (Portrait); Carbonell Award for Best New Work (Shoot, Tin Box Boomerang); and multiple awards for Best Production and Best Director from both the Sun Post and Miami New Times.  He was recently nominated for a Carbonell Award for Best Actor (Speed the Plow) and Best Director for this production of BROADSWORD.  Tei has performed at Mad Cat in five shows, created the props for every single play, and served as costume and set designer for nearly half of the productions over the past decade.  He has directed, acted, and designed for several theatres in South Florida, including City Theatre, GableStage, Florida Stage, Mosaic, Naked Stage, Actor's Playhouse, and Ensemble Stage.  Tei is a SAG member and has appeared in numerous commercials, and several TV shows.

In addition to Tei, the award-winning cast of BROADSWORD also includes local Miami actors Ken Clement, Sofia Citarella, Todd Allen Durkin, Erik Fabregat, and Gregg Weiner.  The award-winning design team includes lighting designer Sevim Abaza, costume designer Erin Amico, sound designer Matt Corey and scenic designer Sean McLelland.  Together, the cast and design team boast over 30 Carbonell Awards, and represent the very best of cutting-edge theater in South Florida.
