The Public Theatre of South Florida takes aim at Military Domestic Violence in
the World Premiere of "…And Then She Moved the Furniture"
The Public Theatre of South Florida continues it highly praised 2005-2006
Season with the World Premiere of Manny Diez's scathing play "…And Then She
Moved the Furniture".
Based on the Fort Bragg spousal murders of 2002 revealed in an expose in Vanity
Fair, the play explores some of the reasons for the disturbing and chronic
problem of domestic violence in the military. Todd Dawkins (Matt Stabile) is
a dedicated and deadly Special Forces sniper who is deployed to Afghanistan and
Iraq with his best friend and spotter Walt (Christopher Kauffmann). When he
returns to his home at Ft. Bragg, he finds that his young wife Trish (Nikki
Fridh) has rearranged the furniture in his den, his "safe place". The results
are a tragic explosion of sexual abuse and graphic violence.
The cast also features Merry Jo Pitasi as Todd's JAG defense attorney and
Valentina Izzara as Trish's free-spirited sister. The production is directed
by the Public's Executive Artistic Director, David Jay Bernstein, who is
assisted by Production Stage Manager Bonnie Benson and Associate Producer Jerry
Jensen.
With the subject of military domestic violence being of timely concern, the
Public Theater has also joined forces with several local and national
organizations that are advocating reform in the system and providing support
for victims. There will be talkbacks with the playwright, director, cast and
representatives from several of these groups, including Women in Distress and
Veterans for Peace, following most performances.
The production opened on Saturday, February 25th and runs through Sunday, March
19th, with the following performance schedule:
Thursdays at 8:00 p.m.
Saturdays at 2:00* and 8:00 p.m. (*Saturday, March 11th Matinee at 1:00 p.m.)
Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
All performances are held at the Soref Jewish Community Center, 6501 W. Sunrise
Blvd., Plantation, FL (three traffic lights west of the Florida Turnpike).
Tickets are $22 Adults; $20 Seniors; $15 for Veterans, Active Military and
their Spouses; and $10 for Students. This production is NOT RECOMMENDED FOR
CHILDREN, due to strong language and graphic sexual violence. For Information
