New Theatre Company will take up residence in performance space in Miami Lakes.
The ALLIANCE THEATRE Lab is announcing a full season of three plays from October 2006 to April 2007. Coming off of last year's successful production of David Mamet's American Buffalo, the Lab will be performing its productions at the Main Street Playhouse in Miami Lakes.
LONELY PLANET by Steven Dietz
September 27 – October 15, 2006
This compassionate play reveals friendship and fear in the age of AIDS. Jody, a map store owner, has to leave his place to take an HIV test. His reluctance to go outside his own planet causes his friend, Carl to teach him a lesson in responsibility and love. "Dietz owns all the tools of a crackerjack writer." —NY Newsday.
TWO ROOMS by Lee Blessing
November 30 – December 17, 2006
From one of America's most prolific playwrights of the modern era, comes a timely piece dealing with the taking of innocent hostages by political terrorists. This powerful work focuses on the victim at hand, their loved ones fighting for their freedom, and those who will stop at nothing to feed their ambitions. "…the playwright's eye is penetrating…Mr. Blessing reaffirms his authority with timely political questions" —NY Times.
BEAUTIFUL THING by Jonathan Harvey
April 5 – April 22, 2007
Two boys, Jamie & Ste, form a friendship in working class London. While Jamie is an outcast, Ste is a popular, athletic student. As Jamie's problems come to a head, their bond grows into something more. Now with a help of a female friend (with an interesting but appealing quirk of her own,) Jamie & Ste have to deal with prejudice in a slowly conforming world. "Jonathan Harvey's endearing, lopsided smile of a comedy about a boy who falls for the boy next door…warm and rewarding" —NY Times."
ABOUT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE LAB:
The ALLIANCE THEATRE Lab was founded in 2001 as the Modern Stage. After three years of successful shows including Will Kern's Hellcab and Adam Rapp's Nocturne, the company took some time off to regroup, add new members, and adjust their mission statement. In 2005, the company reemerged with a new moniker, The ALLIANCE THEATRE Lab. Along with founder and artistic director Adalberto Acevedo, Rachel Finley signed on as Managing Director and Andrio Chavarro as company liaison.
The Lab's focus is to develop a core of directors. Those directors would become leaders, helping actors to explore their craft. Acevedo says, "The Alliance should be a place for theatre artists and audiences to come together and confront the issues that affect all our lives".
The first production under the Alliance banner was David Mamet's American Buffalo. This piece was chosen to reinforce the Lab's commitment to producing plays that inspired company members to become theatre artists in the first place. The Alliance hopes that audiences will come to the theatre with the same enthusiasm and passion that this group of artists bring to the stage.
All plays will be performed at the Main Street Playhouse in Miami Lakes. For tickets, please call (305) 567-2721. For more information, please call the same number or e-mail them at thealliancelab@aol.com. Their website address is www.thealliancetheatrelab.com.
