Ayckbourn Comedy 'Relatively Speaking' Opens at Florida Rep

Florida Repertory Theatre announced the opening of Relatively Speaking, the next play in its 12th season, and one of the funniest ever written by England's favorite playwright, Alan Ayckbourn.

Opening March 12 with discounted previews Mar. 9, 10 & 11, Relatively Speaking is a comedy full of miscommunications, misunderstandings and mistaken identities.

"We're very excited to bring this play to life," said Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director and the play's Director, Robert Cacioppo, "as far as comedies go, it doesn't get any better than Relatively Speaking. It is one of the most well written and witty comedies I've ever read. From the author of Bedroom Farce and Absurd Person Singular, this play is the quintessential mistaken identity comedy, and I know audiences will love it."

Relatively Speaking is a classic human foibles farce, and the plot is simple. Sort of. Ginny is engaged to Greg (although she is having an affair with Phillip). Phillip is married to Sheila (but she is having an affair with Greg, he suspects). Meanwhile Greg thinks Phillip is Ginny's father (in truth, he was Ginny's boss). It sounds complicated because it is. For the characters. But in truth, the only people in the room who know what is happening is the audience, and the play unfolds from start to finish as an already tangled web gets more and more tangled.

Relatively Speaking features an all-star cast of Florida Rep regulars. Audiences will recognize Chris Clavelli, Carrie Lund, Jason Parrish and Kim Morgan Dean. Clavelli and Lund play Phillip and Sheila, a couple whose 30-year marriage is as stale as the toast and marmalade they eat for breakfast every Sunday. Clavelli makes his third appearance this season after having been seen in Opus and You Can't Take It With You. Also seen in last month's critically acclaimed You Can't Take It With You, Lund has been delighting audiences for 12 seasons now, and was also seen in this season's Boeing-Boeing.

As our young lovers, Greg and Ginny, Jason Parrish and Kim Morgan Dean are reunited onstage after playing opposite one another in season nine's hit comedy, Moon Over Buffalo. Dean also appeared in that season's Scapino, and returns to the Rep after a 3 year absence for Relatively Speaking. Another familiar face, Parrish was seen most recently as a Macy's elf in the Rep's holiday offering, David Sedaris' The Santaland Diaries.

Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo (You Can't Take It With You; Boeing-Boeing; Dial 'M' for Murder), directs the play and is joined by an expert team of designers who have worked together to bring 1967 England to vibrant life on the Arcade stage. The design team is also familiar to Florida Rep audiences, and includes set & lighting designer Kenneth J. Martin (Art of Murder; Visiting Mr. Green), costume designer Roberta Malcolm (You Can't Take It With You; Boeing-Boeing), sound designer Kate Smith (Opus) and, making her Florida Rep debut, stage manager Amy Massari.

Relatively Speaking by Alan Ayckbourn plays at Florida Rep Mar. 12-28, with discounted previews Mar. 9 at 8pm, Mar. 10 at 2pm and Mar. 11 at 8pm. Performances are Tues. - Sat. at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on Wed., Sun. & selected Saturdays with a special Twilight Performance at 7pm on Mar. 14.

Relatively Speaking is sponsored by Direct Impressions and The News-Press.

Subscriptions and single tickets are now on sale through the box office at 239-332-4488. Single tickets are priced at $42, $38 & $20 and $25 & $20 for previews.

Florida Repertory Theatre performs in the Historic Arcade Theatre on Bay St. between Jackson & Hendry with free parking in the Fort Myers River District. Visit Florida Rep online at www.floridarep.org.
