John Pielmeier's
"Agnes of God"
Opens February 22nd at Palm Beach Dramaworks
"Agnes of God" traces the spiritual journeys of three women as they search for the truth. Dr. Martha Livingston, a court appointed psychiatrist, is called upon to determine the sanity of a young nun accused of murdering her newborn – whose birth and conception she claims to have no memory of. The Mother Superior is determined to protect Agnes from Dr. Livingston, thus creating a clash of faith versus science. While answers surrounding the baby's death are being sought, the meaning of faith, reason, sacrifice and redemption are called into question.
Directed by Dramaworks' Producing Artistic Director, William Hayes, the cast includes: Barbara Bradshaw as Mother Superior, Margery Lowe as Agnes and Lisa Morgan as Dr. Livngston. The play will feature scenery designed by Michael Amico, costumes designed by Erin Amico and lights designed by John Hall.
"Agnes of God," one of John Pielmeier's most recognized plays, was produced on Broadway in 1982, starring Elizabeth Ashley, Geraldine Page and Amanda Plummer where it was nominated for two Tony Awards and a Drama Desk Award. Three years later, Pielmeier wrote the screenplay for "Agnes of God." The film, which starred Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly was nominated for three Academy Awards, two Golden Globe awards and a Writers Guild of America Award.
John Pielmeier wrote "Agnes of God" while attending the Actor's Theatre in Louisville – it was there that his play was first performed in 1980. Pielmeier has won several awards for his work including a National Endowment for the Arts, a Christopher award and the Humanitas Award for Choices of the Heart as well as nominations from the Writers Guild of America. His other works include Courage, The Boys of Winter and Voices in the Dark. His television credits include The Stranger Within, Sins of the Father and Living with the Dead.
