From the author of Making God Laugh, a production that Actors' Playhouse's audiences fell in love with two seasons ago, comes Sean Grennan's newest play. The Tin Woman is a rich, funny and moving theatrical experience involving a postoperative heart transplant recipient struggling with her own survival guilt, who decides to meet the family of the late donor, their son. The grief of the late donor's family coupled with the recipient's own questions, fears and doubts evolve into a very real, very funny and touching new play, that leaves the audience with an unexpected and moving resolution.
"Every once and a while you are fortunate enough to find a play with the ability to switch from dramatic situations to comedic in a heartbeat. Sean Grennan has done this with The Tin Woman, " said Actors' Playhouse Artistic Director David Arisco. "Real life situations force you to cry one minute and laugh the next. It's a remarkable new play."
Directed by Arisco, Jennifer Christa Palmer (Scott and Hem) brings Joy to life when she receives the heart of Jack Borden (played by Cliff Burgess: Unnecessary Farce) who died in a car accident. Still unhappy and questioning her own guilt and survival, Joy tracks down Jack's family to get answers and closure. For the Bordens, Jack's Mom Alice (Laura Turnbull: August: Osage County, Becky's New Car), Dad Hank (Ken Clement: West Side Story, Ragtime), and Sister Sammy (Natalia Coego: Bad Jews, New Jerusalem at GableStage) the loss of Jack uniquely impacts them all as they struggle with their grief. Lela Elam plays the nurse and Joy's friend Darla who convinces Joy to meet her donor's family.
The creative team for The Tin Woman includes Scenic and Properties Design by Jodi Dellaventura, Lighting Design by Eric Nelson, Sound Design by Shaun Mitchell and Costume Design by Ellis Tillman.
Actors' Playhouse, in conjunction with its production of The Tin Woman, has partnered with the University of Miami's Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency to promote the success of organ, eye and tissue donation, and the need for registered donors, during the run of the production. Audience members are invited to stay after the performance of The Tin Woman to participate, and they will also have the opportunity to sign up onsite to become an organ donor and give someone the greatest gift of all: a second chance at life.
