Actors' Playhouse Musical Theatre for Young Audiences
Presents Fun for the Whole Family in the 2010-2011 Season
A season full of entertainment and cultural enrichment for the entire family will be presented by South Florida's award-winning theatre for young audiences. In its 2010-2011 season, Actors' Playhouse Musical Theatre for Young Audiences presents a unique line-up of shows related to classic children's literary works.
Back by popular demand to begin the new season is the classic story King Midas and His Friends, written by Peggy Simon Traktman, with music by South Florida native Steven Bergman (October 19 - November 19, 2010). Audiences will join King Midas and his friends Venus, Pandora, Neptune, Pluto, Atlas and Hercules for a musical romp through Greek Mythology. Midas and his golden touch, Pandora's box, the origin of The Echo, how Hercules tricks Atlas into holding the world on his shoulders and more are here in this whimsical musical revue.
For the holiday season, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents A Christmas Carol, the Musical (November 30 - December 19, 2010). This
Charles Dickens classic takes a musical turn in this festive holiday favorite, adapted by Nina Felice and Earl Maulding with music and lyrics by Scott Morlock and Earl Maulding. Tiny Tim and the entire Cratchit family join three unearthly "Spirits" in trying to convince Ebeneezer Scrooge to change his "Bah-Humbug" ways. This is a musical adaptation written especially for family audiences that will warm your heart as it reveals the true meaning of the holidays.
Kicking off the New Year is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (January 13 - March 12, 2011). Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair, and he is right. Things only get worse as the day goes on: his best friend bails on him, there's no dessert in his lunch bag, there's lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV! The only reasonable response is to move to Australia. Judith Viorst adapted her own award-winning children's book into this musical that is wacky, wild, and wise.
The 16th Annual National Children's Theatre Festival will take place April 28 - May 28, 2011, with a world premiere children's musical chosen from Actors' Playhouse's National Call to Competition, which will be announced soon. To celebrate the new musical, Actors' Playhouse will present a Kids Fest Family Weekend April 30 - May 1, featuring the new musical with all day family cultural entertainment and hands-on activities.
Closing out the season will be Madeline and the Gypsies (June 23 - August 6, 2011). "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines." With this classic storybook line, the audience enters the world of Madeline and the Gypsies. When Madeline and her friend, Pepito, get lost during a visit to the carnival and end up being carried away by gypsies, their rousing adventures with a traveling circus begin. But poor Miss Clavel won't rest until she has brought them safely home. This musical based on the popular Madeline book series by
Ludwig Bemelmans, bursts with daring circus acts, song and sweet silliness.
