(Tracy Letts Is Pictured)
The Waterfront Playhouse announced auditions for "August: Osage County," the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, which will be part of the 2011/12 season. Auditions will be held Tuesday, May 31, 5 to 8 pm at the Waterfront Playhouse. Production dates for the show are scheduled for December 20, 2011 to January 14, 2012, with rehearsals beginning sometime early November.
"August: Osage County" is by Tracy Letts and will be directed by the Waterfront's artistic director Danny Weathers. The play began at Chicago's famed Steppenwolf theater, where it garnered rave reviews, which prompted a run on Broadway that lasted over two years.
"August" is one of the most celebrated plays of our generation, winning ecstatic reviews wherever it has appeared, as well as every major theater award available. The New York Times said the play is "flat-out, without qualifications the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years."
The play is an epic work about the Weston family of Oklahoma, who are reunited after the disappearance of the family patriarch. Throw in a pill-popping, acid-tongued mother and three daughters who harbor secrets of their own, and the result is a near apocalyptic family meltdown. Fiercely funny, at times harrowing and always enormously entertaining, "August" is an exhilarating piece of theater.
"August" requires experienced actors. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, but auditioners will have time to look over audition scenes before they are asked to read. There are a few perusal scripts available. Callbacks TBD. All roles are open. All roles are paid.
