Master Playwright Series Starts in February & Inaugural Production (Woody Sez) Opens in March
Alyona Aleksandra Ushe, Executive Director of Arts Garage, the vibrant and diverse cultural hotbed in downtown Delray Beach, announced the addition of Lou Tyrrell as Artistic Director of a new offshoot, The Theatre at Arts Garage.
Located on the SW corner of 1st Street and 2nd Avenue in Delray's booming Pineapple Grove, Arts Garage is, according to Ushe, "a magnet to creative energy, presenting and producing powerful, innovative, eclectic programs not offered anywhere else in South Florida."
"Incorporating an Off-Broadway resident theatre company into the fiber of the organization is a vibrant next step in the evolution of Arts Garage," she added. "Engaging Lou Tyrrell, who is a creative force with a proven track record, dynamic vision and unwavering resolve, enables us to build a solid foundation and continue to enrich the cultural landscape of our region."
"Arts Garage, with it's mission to produce an eclectic mix of world-class multi-disciplinary arts experiences, is a 21st Century model for total cultural immersion, and I can't think of a better, more culturally-vibrant community than Delray Beach to make this happen," said Tyrrell, the founder and long-time Producing Director of
Florida Stage, who promises "theatre that will change your DNA."
The Theatre at Arts Garage will kick-off in early 2012 with several audience-building programs and productions:
+ The Master Playwright Series
(February 7, 14, 21& 28)
The Theatre at Arts Garage will debut with a celebration of contemporary American theatre through play-readings of work from some of America's most renowned living playwrights, including
Israel Horovitz (
Line, Park Your Card in Harvard Yard, The Indian Wants the Bronx),
John Guare (
The House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation) and
William Mastrosimone (
Extremities, Cat's Paw). Following the play-readings, the Master Playwrights will share their perspectives and insights on the art form, discuss how the selected plays fit into their overall body of work, and illuminate issues of creating theatre in the 21st Century.
+ The New Play Festival
(March 1-4)
The New Play Festival, a feast of six play-readings over four days will also include playwriting workshops conducted by Master Playwright
William Mastrosimone (
The Woolgatherer,
Extremities, Sinatra: the mini-series).
+ Woody Sez
(March 16 – April 8)
The inaugural production of The Theatre at Arts Garage will be a musical salute to folk legend
Woody Guthrie in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth. A stirring, audience-rousing show that celebrates the American spirit, revels in the American folk music tradition and honors the American character in tough, economic times, this award-winning production of
Woody Sez recently returned from an acclaimed tour of England.
"Our ultimate vision for Arts Garage is to become an international destination for exceptionally gifted artists, both iconic, established talents as well as legends in the making," said Ushe. "A cultural hub for creative forces to explore their talents and passions without boundaries or barriers, Arts Garage strives to bring all artistic disciplines together, collaborating not only under one roof but also on one stage. That is contemporary Theater, and that is what we envision The Theatre at Arts Garage becoming."
