Join author/star Jake Ehrenreich and four singer musicians on a musical journey of Jake's life from Brooklyn to the Catskills to Rock 'N Roll to Broadway in the hugely popular and critically acclaimed A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, which ran 18 months at Off-Broadway's famed Lamb's Theatre, and sold out for 17 weeks in West Palm Beach at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts. The show has played Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Phoenix and is now returning to South Florida.
A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, which The New York Times praised and compared to Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, is a touching, and poignant musical comedy about an immigrant family and one "baby boomer" boy's quest for the American Dream.
It is the story of a first generation American boy, the son of Holocaust survivors who grew up in 1960s Brooklyn playing stickball and pop music, wanting nothing more than to be an 'all American kid' while simultaneously loving and avoiding his parents' values and culture.
Ehrenreich's energy, enthusiasm and passion engage the audience and fill 90 minutes with laughter, tears, song and history. Making extensive use of music, humor, genuine pathos, video and photographs, Ehrenreich returns to his roots to guide us through a classic first generation immigrant story in a multi-media presentation including songs from his youth (classic rock to his mother's Yiddish lullabies,) and a show-stopping re-creation of a Catskills Mountains-Borscht Belt Hotel evening of entertainment.
The New York Times praised A Jew Grows in Brooklyn as "Dazzling, funny, sweet, touching affectionate, beautiful... has a lot in common with Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays and you don't have to be Jewish or Brooklynish" to love the show.
ABC - TV exclaimed A Jew Grows In Brooklyn "speaks to anyone hoping to live out the American Dream."
WOR- Radio NY - called it "A delightful journey with all the joy, tenderness and heartbreak of being a Jew."
Born in Brooklyn and named Jacob Isaac Ehrenreich after his grandfathers who were lost in the Holocaust, Jake is the son of Jojne (Jonah) and Bala, who arrived in the United States with his two sisters in 1949. The show is dedicated to all of his relatives, especially his father, who only recently passed away.
Before developing A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, Ehrenreich, a gifted singer and musician, performed on Broadway in Dancin', Barnum and They're Playing Our Song, and toured world-wide as Ringo in Beatlemania. In addition to his theater work, Ehrenreich has appeared in concert with such diverse artists as Richie Havens, Tito Puente, Gregg Allman, Cab Calloway, John Davidson, The Smothers Brothers, Fats Domino and Del Shannon.
