BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Broward County Cultural Division announced Susan Anderson, visual arts teacher, J.P. Taravella High School, as the 24th annual Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year. A ceremony to recognize this award will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 6:00 p.m., at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

In a show of great emotion and surprise, Susan Anderson received this outstanding news in the school auditorium full of her students, family and friends, as well as members of the School Board of Broward County, FL. and Broward Cultural Division staff.

Susan Anderson holds a bachelor of fine arts in education/ceramics from Florida Atlantic University; is a studio art major from the School of Visual Arts in New York City; and is board certified in Early Adolescence through Young Adult Art with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She has taught at J.P. Taravella High School for more than 15 years and has worked as a summer instructor with art programs at both the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University and the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

"I guide students to work through their troubles by producing art. I hold a fundamental belief in the education of the whole child," says Anderson, who holds professional memberships from Florida Arts Educators Association; Broward County Teacher's Guild; National Arts Educator's Association; Broward Art Guild; Broward Art Educator Association and Palm Beach Photographic Society. She has promoted and instituted many innovative activities and projects at J.P. Taravella High School including, Pinwheels for Peace, Think Art, and Shared Inspirations, just to name a few. Anderson says, "opening minds to new information and ideas, while opening hearts to creative expression is one of my major goals." Her most recent art subjects are creative photography and color photography/exploratory.

The Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year Award was created by the Broward County Cultural Division in 1985 to annually recognize a most outstanding arts teacher in Broward County schools. Teachers, whose primary assignment is in an arts discipline including dance, drama, music, visual arts and media arts, are eligible to apply or be nominated. The selection panel is composed of members of the Broward Cultural Council's Arts Education Committee. Applicants submit a written application, audio/visual exhibits, and are observed in the classroom by members of the selection panel. In addition to the ceremony and reception at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the winner receives a cash stipend, a scholarship to Nova Southeastern University, a Tiffany crystal apple, an inscribed brick on Riverwalk, and an assortment of gifts from cultural organizations and businesses.
