17th Annual New Playwright Festival

NEW PLAYWRIGHT FESTIVAL, FEATURING THE WORK OF EIGHT CURRENT STUDENTS AND TWO FAMED ALUMNI, TO HIGHLIGHT 20^{TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS THEATRICAL DIVISION, MAY 4 - 6 AT NWSA LOUISE O. GERRITS THEATRE}

^{Continuing to step out as one of South Florida's most creative dramatic forces, the Theater Division of NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS (NWSA), will continue to celebrate the famed institution's 20th Anniversary with the 17th Annual New Playwright Festival, presenting a total of 10 plays of student and alumni-produced works in a four-performance schedule, Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, at 4:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M., and Sunday, May 6, at 1 P.M. and 4 P.M., at NWSA Louise O Gerrits Theatre, 25 N.E. 2nd Street, downtown Miami   Guided by James Randolph, director and faculty member at NWSA, among the playwrights whose works will be premiered are alumni Tarrell McCraney and Lucas Leyva.}

^{Having already established themselves as serious players, McCraney, a 1999 graduate is currently completing graduate studies at Yale School of Drama where he created five new works, including The Brother's Size performed at New York Public Theater's Under The Radar Festival. As an actor, McCraney has distinguished himself for his acclaimed performance in "Blue/Orange" at Chicago's Northlight Theatre. Directed by NWSA Theatre Division Dean Patrice Bailey, McCraney will present The Ladies of AP Present. NFAA winner and president and founder of the Borscht Film Festival, Lucas Layva, a 1995 graduate, is currently attending Fordham University. Leyva who began his playwright career at 15 with Holy War has showcased ten works in six states. James Randolph will direct Lucas' Testostaunauts.} 

^{Other NWSA playwrights presenting works include Eduardo Wienskoski - Watching TV on my Bed; Allison Rich - Disease; Dominic Benevento - Floating; Glenn George - Southbound Northbound; Veronica Gessa - The Patriot; Spencer Morin - 95; David Sirois - Granny's Bones; Jessica Farr - Apparent Strangers.   "Normally, new playwrights rarely get the opportunity to see their works produced," said Randolph. "In addition to the presence of enthusiastic audiences composed of the general public as well as students, the plays will have the added advantage of being presented in a serious theater environment with superior technical back-up."}

^{NWSA's New Playwright Festival will be presented Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, at 4:30 and 7:30 P.M., and Sunday, May 6 at 1 P.M. and 4 P.M. at the Louise O.
