Set in 1904, "Gem" is chronologically the first of ten plays in August Wilson's acclaimed Century Cycle examining the African-American experience, decade-by-decade. When Citizen Barlow lets another man die for one of his crimes, it sparks a chain of events that drive a community deeper into turmoil and sets Citizen on a journey to redemption in which he must remember the pain of the past before he can truly be free.
