Theatre Memphis has decided on its play selection for the 2012-13 season.
The 411 seat Lohrey Stage will begin the season with Fiddler on the Roof, a musical about Tevye, father of five girls, and the conflict of traditional Jewish family beliefs that ensues and pushes the family to make choices. Featuring popular songs like If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker, Matchmaker and Sunrise, Sunset, this show captures the emotion and heart of a compelling story. The next production on the Lohrey Stage will be Christopher Hampton’s adaptation, Dangerous Liaisons. This period presentation is a high-stakes play of passion and betrayal at the highest level. The drama Six Degrees of Separation follows next in line on the Lohrey Stage with deception and misdirection at its core. A Chorus Line commands the middle of the season with its story and music about dancers auditioning for a Broadway show and revealing their lifes’ journeys along the way. The comedy Brighton Beach Memoirs, a Neil Simon semi-autobiographical romp, follows a young man coming of age who is dealing with a search for his own identity. The season finale on the Lohrey Stage is the musical Singin’ in the Rain. The feel good musical contains songs like Make ‘Em Laugh, Moses Supposes and the title song Singin’ in the Rain. The family favorite, A Christmas Carol, will be performed as a special holiday offering in December for the 35th consecutive year at Theatre Memphis with Barry Fuller returning once again to portray Ebenezer Scrooge.
The Next Stage season includes Talley’s Folly by Lanford Wilson. A Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, this romantic comedy brings together two unlikely sweethearts who must come full circle in their lives to be a couple. A high energy offering is scheduled as the second Next Stage show with the boy-band style musical satire of Altar Boyz . Next on the schedule is a regional premiere of a new contemporary drama, A Steady Rain, which follows two unlikely policemen who are best friends and who must face the consequences of their horrific, poor decision making. The final offering on the Next Stage for 2012-13 will be the endearing Sylvia, a comedy about a couple who take in a stray dog (which is played by an actress). Man’s best friend becomes the wife’s worst nightmare in this classic battle of wits.
