The Orpheum continues its exciting Summer Movie Series with MEAN GIRLS on Thursday, August 8 at 7:00 PM. Pre-movie activities include a special appearance by Memphis' ultimate mean girls - the Memphis Roller Derby - led by hometown blogger Kerry Crawford, author of the I Love Memphis Blogand longtime member of the Memphis Roller Derby league.
Locally instituted in 2006, Memphis Roller Derby is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization completely run by skaters and volunteers. The league is made up of 3 home teams, Angels of Death, Priskilla Prezleys, and Women of Mass Destruction; and one all-star travel team, the Memphis Hustlin' Rollers. For MEAN GIRLS, Memphis Roller Derby will host a live on-stage skating demonstration before the film.
"We are looking forward to being at the Orpheum for MEAN GIRLS," said Emily Ward-Markle, the League's Public Relations representative. "If you can't play nice, play roller derby."
Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in MEAN GIRLS, a comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics."
