Sanders Family Christmas is the sequel to the wildly successful bluegrass gospel musical Smoke on the Mountain. It's December 24, 1941, and the lovable, quirky Sanders clan has gathered for one last performance at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church before young Dennis is shipped out for boot camp. Stories to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone are woven together with some familiar Gospel Christmas tunes such as "Away in a Manger" and "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem," as well as fun original songs such as "A Country Kind of Christmas" and "Cactus Christmas Tree."
Chris Cotton makes his Playhouse on the Square debut as family patriarch Burl Sanders, Jeanna Julson (Gypsy, Angels in America) as his wife Vera Sanders. Phillip Himebook (Les Miserables) plays oldest son Stanley Sanders and music directs the production. The show also features Meredith Koch, making her Playhouse on the Square debut, and McCheyne Post (One Man, Two Guvnors, Mary Poppins) as twins Dennis and Denise Sanders as well as Associate Company Members Madeline Glenn Thomas (One Man, Two Guvnors, Mary Poppins) and Cameron Reeves (One Man, Two Guvnors, Mary Poppins) as June Sanders and the Reverend Mervyn Oglethorpe.
There will be a preview performance of Sanders Family Christmas on Thanksgiving evening. In lieu of purchasing a ticket, we ask that every person who attends the performance on the evening of November 27th bring a bag of food to be donated to the Mid-South Food Bank.
