Playhouse on the Square and Ballet Memphis will co-host the 3rd Annual Gathering of the Costume Shops on Tuesday, April 17th from noon to 2pm at the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum. Costume personnel from community and professional theatres, dance companies, and colleges and universities are invited to eat, network, and share advice.
“Costume artists tend to be isolated because of the nature of the work,” says Rebecca Powell, Playhouse on the Square’s Resident Costume Designer of 12 years. “This is a chance for solidarity among the designers, technicians, and shop volunteers in the region.” The Gathering of the Costume Shops has grown from a handful of participants when it began to over 40 people last year. This year, the hosts are reaching beyond Memphis. “We’re especially excited to have heard from people in Little Rock and we’re hoping to see costume shops from Mississippi, too,” says Powell.
The Woodruff- Fontaine Museum will lead tours of the house and clothing conservation workshops. The free event will also feature a special demonstration by Debi Weinert, the inventor of My Own Fringemaker, an embellishing tool manufactured in Tennessee. Learn more at myownfringemaker.com.
Participating groups are encouraged to bring brochures and flyers for their shops’ services. Please RSVP to Rebecca Powell at 901-937-6478 with the number of guests and whether you would like to bring materials for the information table.
