Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe is presenting a reading of Natural Shocks by award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson on Saturday, April 21, at 5PM at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church, 5530 Shady Grove Road, in Memphis, TN.
Based on Hamlet's "To be or not to be," Natural Shocks is a new one-woman tour-de-force play that bursts to life when we meet a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. She overflows with quirks, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns in America in your very lap. This play contains adult language and intense situations, and is not recommended for children.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the Memphis chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (momsdemandaction.org). After the reading, the audience is invited to stay for a talk back session with panel guests.
Natural Shocks is part of a national project of theatre activism regarding gun violence. There are nearly 100 confirmed readings spanning more than 25 states between April 19-23 in conjunction with the National School Walkout to bring attention to gun violence (naturalshocks.org).
Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe often presents work challenging the audience to think about issues that affect our mental health, and growing concerns regarding gun violence are ever-present in the minds of American citizens today. In the wake of violent events, discussions often focus on the mental health of the criminal, yet people with mental health issues are much more likely to be the victims of crime, not the perpetrators.
