With the completion of the new Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education the Orpheum Theatre is proud to introduce an annual music series. Beginning October 17th with Chester Thompson Trio, the 2015-2016 Music Series will feature a variety of musical artists that break boundaries and redefine the parameters of conventional genres.
"It's no secret that music is an important part of the Memphis landscape, and we're thrilled that the Halloran Centre allows us to broaden the scope of music that we can offer our audiences," says Alice Roberts, Vice President of Programming & Education.
This inaugural six-part series introduces artists whose unique styles prove difficult to label. Critically acclaimed trio Infinitus mixes beatboxing with classical string instruments; composer Robin Spielberg spans a musical repertoire of everything from American standards to original lullabies; and season six America Idol songstress Melinda Doolittle is known for her flawless neo-soul vocals and passionate delivery. These performers and more combine to offer a melodic smorgasbord of engagements that both challenge and excite every musical taste.
Complimenting this exciting lineup is among the Halloran Centre's most advanced technological amenities: Meyer Sound's Constellation acoustic system. Constellation is a complete solution of equipment and services provided exclusively by Meyer Sound. This groundbreaking technology enables the acoustical properties of a room to be altered to suit the nature of the event taking place. Combining a patented algorithm, advanced digital processing, and miniature transducer technology with decades of research into the acoustical attributes of exceptional listening spaces, Constellation provides flexibility unattainable with traditional mechanical methods of variable acoustics.
"The Constellation system is among the main reasons we decided to incorporate a Music Series into the Halloran Centre's programming," Roberts continues. "The capabilities of this sound system will create an acoustic experience unlike any other in the region."
Music Series performances will be primarily held at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education located at 225 S. Main Street in downtown Memphis, adjacent to the historic Orpheum Theatre. The return engagement of Black Violin will take place at The Orpheum Theatre at 203 S. Main Street.
The Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education, a vital compliment to the Orpheum Theatre, opens to the public this month. The Centre's added classroom space, start-of-the-art 361-seat theatre, dance studio, cutting-edge audio/video lab, and rehearsal/reception hall allows the Orpheum to expand its education and community initiatives to better serve individuals of all ages. The Halloran Centre will increase the Orpheum's programming capacity and enable the organization to serve as many as 100,000 students, teachers, and families within the first five years of operation.
