For the first time in Summer Movie Series history, screenings will take place in two venues: the historic Orpheum Theatre and the new Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education. This year's series will open and close at the historic Orpheum, with July screenings to take place in the 361-seat auditorium inside the Halloran Centre. Beginning in June the historic Orpheum will close for cosmetic improvements such as repainting the auditorium and restoring the gold leaf.
Orpheum President & CEO Brett Batterson states, "I am honored that my first Orpheum Summer Movie Series as President will also be the first to incorporate both of our beautiful venues, all while we enact our mission of preserving and improving the historic Orpheum. It truly is going to be an epic summer!"
The 2016 Summer Movie Series will continue to offer a variety of activities in both the Orpheum and Halloran Centre prior to each film. Notable opportunities include an on-camera "soap screen test" prior to Tootsie and a 90s-inspired prom before 10 Things I Hate About You. The 2016 lineup also marks the first time the Orpheum has offered a Spanish-language film with Pan's Labyrinth. Returning this year are movie trivia contests for select titles, the ever-popular "selfie station," special guest appearances, movie-themed drink specials, and pre-show performances on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ at the historic Orpheum Theatre.
This year, the Orpheum is excited to partner with local favorite Star & Micey. The band's popular musical stylings supply this summer's sound with their latest hit single "Get 'Em Next Time" featured on the series trailer. Star & Micey will make an appearance at the series opener, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
Star & Micey's Nick Redmond says, "I've been going to the summer series since it started. I think it is a great program and have always wished to be involved in the Orpheum in some way. I love that place and its history. It is an honor to be a part of the 2016 series."
Star & Micey is comprised of Nick Redmond, Geoff Smith, Joshua Cosby, and Jeremy Stanfill. The band's newest album, Get 'Em Next Time, was released in March and is now available on iTunes.
Tickets for the Orpheum's 2016 Summer Movie Series go on sale May 6. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Packages of 10 tickets are available for $60 and may be used for a single movie or spread throughout the series. The "10 packs" are redeemable for movies in either venue and are subject to availability. Patrons who purchase a "10 pack" are encouraged to arrive early for Halloran Centre screenings as space is limited.
Tickets will be available at www.orpheum-memphis.com, the Orpheum Box Office (901.525.3000), and the ticket counter at The Booksellers at Laurelwood.
