The core idea of this musical journey came from Litch's portrayal of Garland in the TM production of The Boy from Oz in the 2014-15 season. Widely acclaimed for the authentic nature of the performance, the basis of the story takes one through Garland's early movie years to her triumphant Carnegie Hall concert. It is a sentimental and difficult journey expressed though song, imagery and transformation of Litch to Garland.
Ward, a fan and aficionado of all things Judy Garland, was a natural to collaborate, create the script, collect accompanying imagery to underscore the storyline and direct. "My connection to Garland has been a lifelong relationship it seems," he says. "To have the opportunity to mold her story around a natural talent like Debbie has just made it all the more gratifying. And I get to design her the perfect Garland glamour gown for Debbie to wear!" Musical direction and accompaniment is supplied by Gary Beard
Litch underplays her role in that she feels the spotlight should stay on the mission of the theater. She says, "This began as something all about Theatre Memphis and should still be about the process we use to develop our productions. I just have the privilege at this juncture to be a part of it in a way that allows me to perform on the stage. My greatest role is still touting Theatre Memphis as a remarkable community asset to the arts." Ward adds, "She is being way too modest. Her Garland is spot on."
