Centro Cultural is proud to present its 2nd Annual Tamale Festival on Saturday, September 24th from 2- 6pm. The family-friendly festival will take place on and around the grounds of Caritas Village at 2509 Harvard Avenue, Memphis TN.
This unique fundraising event celebrates Latino culture, food and community and was a huge success last summer. The 2015 inaugural Tamale Fest counted over 2,000 diverse attendees. This September, the Centro Cultural is expecting a bigger crowd since admission is now FREE.
The 2nd edition of the Tamale Fest will offer once again live entertainment with Venezuelan Band Ritmo Son, the talented 901 Breakers, Mexican Band La Conkistadora, folkloric dancers Tierra Mestiza among others. A special extract from the original bilingual play "Catrina, Lady of Death" will be presented by Cazateatro. A kids' area will include arts and crafts and bouncy castles.
The guest of honor, the tamale, will be sold by local tamaleros (tamale makers) and local restaurants. The Centro Cultural is planning on selling more than 5,000 tamales of all flavors and styles. This year, there will be no tamale contest, however last year's winner, Gabriel Castiblanco, will return to offer his Venezuelan version of the tamale, the hallaca. Food trucks will also sell a variety of Latin American food.
The fundraising event will help the Centro Cultural to promote its Latino heritage through free art classes. "We want to establish a bridge between local communities," explains Rafael Figueroa, chair for the organization since 2015. "We all like to eat, and as we gather around the tamales a dialogue between those of Hispanic origin and others is created ... And we soon realize we have much more in common than we thought: and that's the first step to a harmonious and multicultural society ".
