The 47th season for Playhouse on the Square begins with the regional premiere of Billy Elliot the Musical! Set in a northern English town amidst the turbulent 1984 miners' strike, Billy Elliot the Musical is the inspiring tale of one boy's journey as he exchanges his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. Featuring music by Elton John, The New York Times declares that Billy Elliot the Musical "isn't a dance show; it's about why people need dance."
Taking on the title role of Billy Elliot is thirteen-year-old Memphian, Benjamin Cheng (Les Miserables; Peter Pan). Playing the role of his father is Playhouse on the Square Resident Company Member Michael Detroit (Seminar; The Fantasticks). Resident Company Member Kim Sanders (Kiss Me, Kate; The Rocky Horror Show) is dance teacher Mrs. Wilkinson. Associate Company Member Dane Van Brocklin plays Tony and Seth Judice is Michael. Both Dane and Seth are making their Playhouse on the Square debuts. Billy Elliot the Musical is directed by Geoffrey Goldberg (Mary Poppins).
