The Halloran Centre at the Orpheum presents Althea on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 PM, the last installment of the venue's 2015-2016 Southern Circuit Independent Film Series. No player overcame more obstacles to become a champion than Althea Gibson.
A truant from the rough streets of Harlem, Althea Gibson emerged as an unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950's. She became the first African?American to play and win at Wimbledon and the US Open. When she was the #1 player in the world, she still could not afford her own apartment and was forced from the game to make a living. Shunned from the tennis community, she took her talents to the LPGA, Harlem Globetrotters, and the Ed Sullivan Show. Throughout her journey, Althea remained true to her convictions - an uncompromising individual and unique trailblazer. Stay after the film for a brief Q&A with the filmmaker.
